IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, through its Commission on Ecosystem Management (“CEM”) and the Thematic Group “Red List of Ecosystems” (“RLE”) (collectively referred to as the “Organizers”), in celebration of World Environment Day and the official adoption of the categories and criteria for the identification of threatened ecosystems and the creation of Red Lists of Ecosystems, are pleased to announce the Second IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Photo Contest. The contest is open to amateur photographers worldwide. Registration will be open from July 25th to October 5th 2014.

Photographs may be submitted in either of two categories: Wild Beauty and The Changing World. All submitted photographs will be evaluated in a first round by the general public and in a second round by a jury (the “Jury,” as defined hereunder in 5.4). Winners will be announced during the IUCN World Parks Congress, which will take place 12-19 November 2014 in Sydney, Australia.


1.1. The Second IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Photo Contest begins July 25th and ends October 5th 2014 (the “Contest”). Information on how to enter and prizes forms part of these Official Rules. By submitting an Entry (as defined below), each photographer (the “Photographer(s)”) accepts the Official Rules and warrants that his/her Entry complies with all requirements set out hereunder. This is a skill-based contest and chance plays no part in the determination of winners.


2.1. The contest is open to all amateur photographers, regardless of age, gender or nationality. Entrants under 18 years of age require valid written permission from a parent or legal guardian.


3.1. Send your photograph in digital format including a title, a brief description and the date and location of the photo, as well as your name, residence address and telephone number, to [email protected] or to [email protected]

In the “Subject” line of the message write the phrase: “Second IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Photo Contest – Submission.” Set forth the rest of the information requested in the preceding paragraph in the body of the message, maintaining the order mentioned above and using the following headings for the required sections: “Title,” “Description,” “Location,” “Date,” “Name,” “Residence Address” and “Telephone Number”.

3.2. Participation in this Contest is free of charge for the Photographer(s).

3.3. Each Entry must comply with all of the following requirements:

i. Fall within entry categories:
Wild Beauty: Capture the natural beauty, elegance, power, simplicity and/or drama of the world around us by sharing your images of any ecosystem free of evidence of human intervention or contamination.
The Changing World: Illustrate our human footprint by showing those ecosystems that have been in some way impacted or altered through human intervention or contamination – this impact or alteration may be negative or positive.

3.4. Each Photographer may submit up to two (2) images per category.

3.5. Photographs of any ecosystem (terrestrial, freshwater, marine, etc.) may be submitted.

3.6. Entry is strictly limited to original images to which the Photographer holds all applicable rights. Images that have received an award or recognition in any other photography competitions are not eligible. Images that have been previously published may be submitted.

3.7. All photographs must be taken in or from a safe and lawful location. The Organizers are not responsible for any consequences arising from the taking of any photographs in circumstances that may result in personal injury or unlawful conduct.

3.8. Technical requirements:

i. Only digital images will be accepted, but images do not need to have been taken with a digital camera.
ii. Images that have been retouched using software or by other means will be accepted, but it is not permitted to add or remove objects to/from the image or otherwise to alter the image so that it misrepresents the reality of the scene it depicts.
iii. Both color and monochrome images will be accepted.
iv. File format: PNG or JPG.
v. File size: 300 dpi.

3.9 By entering the Contest, the Photographer thereby agrees strictly to abide and to be bound by these Official Rules.

3.10. The photograph(s) will be judged in accordance with the Judging Criteria, as defined below.

3.11. All Entries must be submitted and received strictly by no later than October 5th 2014, 23:59 UTC-04:30 (Venezuelan Time Zone).


4.1. The winning photographs will be published online on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems website ( as well as in promotional printed materials, in CEM’s sole discretion.

4.2. Additional prizes will be announced if and as they become available.


5.1. Photographs may be submitted in one of the two stated categories: Wild Beauty and The Changing World.

5.2. Submitted images will be organized by CEM into six (6) regions based on the location of the ecosystems they portray: Africa, America, Antarctica, Asia, Europe and Oceania (for regional borders, see

5.3. All submitted photographs will be posted on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems’ Facebook page and be evaluated in a first round by the general public in order to select thirty-six (36) winners: first, second and third place for each of the two categories in each of the six regions. The winners will be the photographs that receive the largest number of “Likes” on the Facebook page.

5.4. Winners of the first round will move on to a second round, where three (3) overall winners (i.e., first, second and third place) will be selected for each of the two categories. Overall winners will be selected by a jury whose members will be appointed by CEM (the “Jury”), on the basis of the photographic technique and the aesthetic, artistic and unique qualities of the image.

5.5. There will be one (1) additional public vote Contest winner who will also be selected from among the first round winners by visitors to the Nature-Based Solutions Pavilion during the IUCN World Parks Congress.

5.6. Decisions resulting from the processes in 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5 above are final and binding and no challenge or appeal of any such decision by any Photographer shall be allowed.


6.1. The winners of the first round under 5.3 will be notified via email by 31st October 2014.

6.2. The winners of the second round under 5.4 above as well as the public vote winner selected by visitors to the IUCN World Parks Congress under 5.5 above will be announced publicly at the Nature-Based Solutions Pavilion before the end of the IUCN World Parks Congress, and will be notified via email shortly afterwards.

6.3. The winners of the Contest under 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5 will be announced at the Nature-Based Solutions Pavilion during the IUCN World Parks Congress, and will be publicly announced through the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems website (, Facebook page, and Twitter account.


7.1. Copyright in each image submitted remains with the Photographer. However, by entering the Contest, the Photographer (who may be an IUCN employee participating outside the scope of his/her employment contract, or any other individual who is not an employee of IUCN) hereby grants to IUCN, CEM and RLE a royalty-free, worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive sub-licensable license to copy, distribute or otherwise use the photograph(s) until the next IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Photo Contest, or for a period of up to two years starting as of 1st November 2014, whichever comes first. The Photographer may choose to extend this license if he/she so chooses at CEM’s request.

Additionally, by submitting his or her photo to the Contest, the Photographer grants the Organizers the right to use his/her name, city, state and country of residence in promotional material and other publications.

7.2. The copyright vests in and is retained by the Photographer. Consequently the photograph(s) will be posted with the following credit:

8.1. By entering this Contest, all Photographers agree to release, discharge, indemnify and hold harmless IUCN,CEM and RLE, and their Members, partners, subcontractors, employees, officers, directors, and representatives from and against any claims, losses, expenses and damages (including legal fees) arising out of (i) their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities (ii) the acceptance, use, misuse and/or possession of any prize awarded hereunder and (iii) the use of the photograph(s) by IUCN, CEM and/or RLE.

Neither IUCN nor CEM or RLE shall bear any responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft, alteration or destruction of, or unauthorized access to Contest Entries or Entry Forms. IUCN, CEM and/or RLE shall not be responsible for any problems with or consequence of technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any email Entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to Photographer’ or any third party’s computers related to or resulting from participation in, uploading or downloading photograph(s) or other materials related to this Contest.


9.1. This Contest is void where prohibited by applicable law.

9.2. Entries shall be void if CEM determines that the photograph(s) is/are not an original, or if the Entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft, or otherwise do not conform with these Official Rules. CEM reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to verify the validity and originality of any Entry and to disqualify any Photographer who submits an Entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who fails to comply strictly with the Entry process. Failure by CEM to enforce any of these or other terms of these Official Rules at any time does not constitute a waiver of its right to enforce them at any other time or instance.

9.3. If the Photographer wins the Contest, then the Organizers may use the winner’s name and photograph(s) in any publicity or advertising relating to the Contest or the promotion of future editions of the Contest indefinitely and without compensation or consent by the Photographer(except where prohibited by law).


10.1. If, for any reason CEM determines that the Contest cannot be run as planned, for any reasons including but not limited to any cause beyond the control of CEM or IUCN that may adversely affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, CEM reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any Photographer(s) and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest. If CEM elects to cancel or terminate the Contest, the Organizers will not retain any rights in the submitted photographs as provided for hereunder and shall destroy all such photographs.


11.1. The Photographer(s) agree that the personal data he/she submits, including but not limited to, name and address, may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes of and in connection with the Contest as outlined in these Official Rules. Personal data will be used by the Organizers solely for the purposes stated herein.


12.1. These Official Rules shall be interpreted and applied in accordance with the laws of Switzerland, and particularly of the Canton of Geneva, and any dispute in reference thereto shall be exclusively and finally submitted to and resolved by the courts of competent jurisdiction in the Canton of Geneva.
