The Scientific Foundations of an IUCN Red List for Ecosystems is a joint project of IUCN/CEM and the IUCN Ecosystem Management Programme, with funding from the MAVA Foundation.
The overall goal of the project is to develop and initiate the implementation of an accepted Red List of Ecosystems at the global, regional and national level. This will be achieved through the following key result areas:
- Guidance and guidelines produced that respond to the major conceptual challenges and issues underlying the assessment of ecosystem collapse risk.
- Conceptual and practitioner workshops convened to examine fundamental scientific challenges in at least three complex, contrasting situations, and in different regions and institutional settings throughout the world.
- Promote the Red List of Ecosystems and support the development and approval of standardized ecosystem classification that can be integrated with the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species.
