Case studies are conducted to test the criteria and categories developed for an IUCN Red Lists of Ecosystems (see key documents). The goal is to create a diverse portfolio of examples from different parts of the world, developed by teams with diverse institutional settings, and representing a variety of terrestrial, freshwater, marine and subterranean ecosystems. Such examples use remote sensing, geographic information systems and field data as their primary sources of data and analysis tools.

Case studies are grouped by the continent where the ecosystem assessment was conducted.
