During the fifth cut of global conservation issues that may affect the biological diversity, annually carried out by a group of researchers, medium and long term potential conservation opportunities and threats were examined. In this fifth cut the Red List of Ecosystems were identified as a key conservation issue for 2014.
In 2011 the first version of the evaluation criteria for the threatened ecosystems of the world was published, while the second version was published in 2013. The publication of the vulnerability state of ecosystems empowers decision-makers, both political and scientific, to make responsible conservation decisions. At the moment, there have been ecosystem assessments in several countries in America, Europe, and Oceania. Furthermore, there is an ongoing regional assessment of the continental ecosystems and other initiatives are expected to be carried out. The ultimate goal is to have a global assessment by the year 2025.
